What Is Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a trinity comprised of a philosophy, science and art based on the principles of tone.

” Tone: is the standard from which we note the variations of structure, temperature, tonicity, elasticity, renitency (resistance), and tension; it is the standard of health; any deviation therefrom is disease. Tone is the BASIC PRINCIPLE, the one from which all other principles, which compose the science, have sprung.”
— pg. 8, The Chiropractor, 1914

” Tone is the tension and firmness, the renitency (resistance) and elasticity of tissue in a state of health, normal existence; The mental and physical condition known as disease is a disordered state because of an unusual amount of tension above or below that of tone;
… normal and abnormal amount of strain or laxity are due to the position of the osseous (skeletal) framework, the neuroskeleton, which not only serves as a protector to the neural system, but, also, as a regulator of tension. The present and future make-up of individualized spirits depend upon the cumulative mental function which, like all functions, is modified by the structural condition of the impulsive, transmitting, neural system”
– pg. 10, The Chiropractor, 1914

So what does all that mean?  That there is an infinite wisdom in your body that knows exactly what it is doing and expresses itself perfectly. This wisdom provides the body with a perfect tone that gives way to optimal function. Many times through physical, emotional, mental or chemical stress this tone is interrupted or distorted. The purpose of chiropractic is to free the body from these interference’s/distortions such that the tonicity can be restored and the inborn wisdom could express itself to its fullest potential.
Dr. Ara Bagdassarian is a Chiropractor whose training emphasizes in tonal (meningeal, structural, and postural) adjustments.

History of chiropractic

In the late 1800’s, a man named D.D. Palmer was introspecting and refining ways of assisting unhealthy people better. As he deepened his understanding of the body and Spirit he began to understand the principles through which they function; namely Tone. His first case based on this newly revealed principle was on Sept. 18, 1895, where a deaf man regained his hearing. That beautiful experience marked the birth of Chiropractic. D.D. Palmer stated,

” Harvey Lillard, a janitor, in the Ryan Block, where I had my office, had been so deaf for 17 years that he could not hear the racket of a wagon on the street or the ticking of a watch. I made inquiry as to the cause of his deafness and was informed that when he was exerting himself in a cramped, stooping position, he felt something give way in his back and immediately became deaf. An examination showed a vertebra racked from its normal position. I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man’s hearing should be restored. With this object in view, a half-hour’s talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever and soon the man could hear as before. There was nothing “accidental” about this, as it was accomplished with an object in view, and the result expected was obtained. There was nothing “crude” about this adjustment; it was specific”
– pg.18, The Chiropractor’s Adjuster, 1910

Recognizing the power of the adjustment and having many more opportunities to assist people, D.D. Palmer recognized what he had found; a unique, powerful, and efficient way to restore body tonicity thus allowing the inborn wisdom to express itself to a greater degree by creating order in the body it lives in.

Today Chiropractic has evolved in it’s artform to many styles and techniques.  Some focus on very specific conditions and others incorporate a broader standpoint. Due to this diversity, results can vary widely.  So if you find a good one, stick to it.
